Extraction & Wisdom Teeth

Tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged, difficult to restore, or causing ongoing dental problems.

What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure used to remove a tooth that cannot be safely maintained or restored through other suitable treatments.

Although preserving a natural tooth is often preferred when possible, extraction may sometimes be recommended when a tooth is extensively damaged, severely decayed, causing infection, or creating other oral-health concerns.

The appropriate treatment depends on the condition of the tooth, surrounding gums and tissues, your overall oral health, and your dentist’s clinical assessment.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to develop and usually appear toward the back of the mouth during the late teenage years or early adulthood. Most people can have up to four wisdom teeth, although some people have fewer or none.

When wisdom teeth have enough room to emerge correctly and remain healthy, they may not require removal. However, some wisdom teeth become trapped beneath the gum or jawbone or emerge at an unusual angle. This is known as an impacted wisdom tooth

Signs You May Need Wisdom Tooth Evaluation

You should consider a dental examination if you experience:

  • Pain at the back of your mouth
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Repeated gum infections
  • Food frequently getting trapped around a wisdom tooth
  • Bad taste or unpleasant mouth odor
  • Tooth decay around the wisdom tooth
  • Pain affecting the neighboring molar
  • Swelling around the jaw

These symptoms do not automatically mean extraction is required. A dentist needs to examine the area and determine the underlying cause.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems?

One common reason wisdom teeth become problematic is insufficient space for normal eruption.

A wisdom tooth may remain partially covered by gum tissue, become trapped against another tooth, or remain within the jawbone. These situations can make cleaning difficult and may allow food and bacteria to collect around the area.

Potential problems can include pain, gum infection, tooth decay, gum disease, and damage involving neighboring teeth.

However, not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. Healthy, symptom-free wisdom teeth may be monitored rather than routinely extracted.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Always Necessary?

No.

A wisdom tooth that is healthy, functional, and free from disease may not need to be removed. In such cases, your dentist may recommend monitoring the tooth and maintaining good oral hygiene around it.

Removal may be recommended when there is evidence of disease or a significant clinical problem, such as repeated infection, decay, gum disease, cysts, pain, or damage to neighboring teeth.

This is why an examination and appropriate imaging are important before deciding on wisdom tooth removal.

IS TEETH CLEANING PAINFUL?

Professional teeth cleaning is generally painless. If you have sensitive teeth or gum inflammation, mild discomfort may occur, but we ensure a comfortable experience.

WHEN DO I NEED ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

A root canal is needed when the tooth pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma. Common symptoms include severe toothache, sensitivity, swelling, or a dental abscess.

IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT PAINFUL?

With modern anesthesia and advanced techniques, root canal treatment is usually as comfortable as getting a filling.

WHEN SHOULD WISDOOM TEETH BE REMOVED?

Wisdom teeth may need extraction if they are impacted, causing pain, infection, swelling, crowding, or damage to adjacent tooth.

HOW LONG DOES DENTAL IMPLANT LAST?

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, dental implants can last for many years, often a lifetime.

IS TEETH WHITENING SAFE?

Yes. Professional teeth whitening performed by a dentist is safe and effective when done under proper supervision.

WHAT CAUSES BAD BREATH?

Bad breath can result from poor oral hygiene, gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, smoking, or certain medical conditions.
